Common Symptoms of Neck Pain
There are a few symptoms of neck pain that are commonly reported:
Sharp pains- You may feel a sharp, stabbing pain that is localized to one area. This symptom is often found in the lower part of the neck.
Stiff neck- You may have difficulty moving your neck due to stiffness. Moving your neck side to side can also be painful.
Radiating pain- This type of pain can radiate down along the nerves of your neck and into your arms and shoulders. The intensity will vary and feel like a searing or burning pain.
Soreness- You may describe the pain as achy or tender instead of sharp. This pain is usually in one area of the neck.
Headaches- The irritation that you feel in your neck may lead to issues with the nerves and muscles connected to your head. This may lead to a tension headache when the neck muscles tighten up. For some people, a pinched optical nerve in their neck can lead to occipital neuralgia, which is a pain that will radiate up into the side of the head and into the scalp.
Numbness, weakness, or tingling- Neck pain may cause these three sensations to radiate down into the shoulders, arms, or fingers. You may feel a “pins-and-needles” sensation in one arm.
Difficulty lifting and gripping objects- Nerve pain can cause this if there is numbness, weakness, or tingling in your fingers.
How Do Neck Pain Symptoms Develop?
There are a few ways you may develop neck pain:
Over time- Your neck pain may start out so slow that you barely even notice it. However, it gradually gets worse and worse as the days and weeks go on.
Right after an injury- Neck pain often occurs the day after you sleep on your neck awkwardly or after a bicycle or car accident.
Delayed reaction- You may not feel any neck pain immediately after an accident. However, symptoms can develop hours or even days later. They can also get worse the longer they are untreated.
With no warning- You may start to experience neck pain for no apparent reason.
The symptoms of neck pain may be constant, or they may come and go on a regular basis. Certain movements, such as coughing or bending, often make the pain worse. Neck pain does often go away without treatment, but you should always talk to your doctor if your symptoms get worse or they don’t go away. Severe neck pain that is a direct result of major trauma should always be treated immediately.
