Why is microneedling the latest craze in skin care & what are the benefits?
The changes your skin and body go through as you age can be difficult to accept, especially when it comes to the condition of the skin on your face. And because women face a lot of insecurities when it comes to aging, the anti-aging market as exploded. According to the Transparency Market Research, by the year 2019, the anti-aging beauty market will be estimated to be worth around $200 billion dollars. Cosmetic treatments from face lifts to Botox have become the norm for women wanting to look younger.
One of the newest trends in the anti-aging world is a treatment called microneedling, which is also called skin needling, percutaneous collagen induction, or collagen induction therapy. This procedure uses fine needles to create mircro-traumas in the skin in order to prompt the body to begin the healing process. Basically, microneedling triggers your body to begin producing new collagen and elastin while also bring fresh blood to the targeted areas.

While new to most people, microneedling has a long history. Dr. Manish H. Shah, a plastic surgeon who practices in Denver, CO, even reports that microneedling “in some form has been practiced for more than 20 years.” However, it is only recently that microneedling has become mainstream in conjunction with other procedures, such as PRP therapy, which stands for platelet-rich plasma. Dr. Shah also says that microneedling has “has become a greater part of the skin care practices of most aesthetic professionals.”
The reason for microneedling’s popularity is that it can help treat a wide range of different skin problems. It can erase fine lines and wrinkles, reduce the look of acne scars, tighten loose skin, improve skin texture, disappear brown and age spots, and get rid of stretch marks. The dermatologist Dr. Tsippora Shainhouse says that after microneedling “the body is forced to make new collagen to fill them in and heal them. This new collagen makes skin look and feel slicker, tighter, and more youthful.”
In order to see results, most practitioners recommend 3-6 session spread over the course of a couple of months. With each treatment, microneedling can reach deeper into your skin. Microneedling can also cost quite a lot less than other treatments as well.
Another benefit of microneedling is that most people make good candidates for the procedure if they don’t have any other underling skin issues, including lesions, infections, and wounds. People with severe acne or cysts should skip microneedling as it can spread acne bacteria around the face and inflame acne-covered skin. But if you skin is clear, but you have acne scarring, microneedling has proven more effective at reducing that scarring as opposed to other procedures.
The risks that comes with microneedling are a lot less than other cosmetic procedures, such as laser therapies and chemical peels. Some of the risk include scarring, busing, infection, bleeding, and skin tone problems.
